Learn Makaton with Include.org
Makaton is a communication programme combining speech, signs and symbols to support inclusive communication. It can be used for all ages and all people to aid understanding, speaking, self-advocacy, empowerment, wellbeing and inclusion. There are lots of different courses available and we are happy to talk to you and advise which one would suit you best.
Why choose Include.org for learning Makaton?
At Include.org, we believe that everyone living with communication difficulties should be empowered and included in their community. Our Makaton Tutors work with people with communication disabilities every day and have real world and lived experience to offer, as well as being licensed tutors who attend regular training to keep our skills refreshed. Any fees paid for Makaton training go directly back into our charity, and contribute towards helping more people with communication needs.
Although we are a charity and have our own costs to cover, our passion is inclusion – so please let us know if you are on a small budget and we will do our best to accommodate your needs!
Training for individuals
Within each financial year, we run Levels 1 to 4 in Makaton. These are delivered online over several evenings, or as a full day session local to East Surrey. Discounts are available for group bookings, in-house training and partner organisations!
In House Training
The best way to embed good inclusive communication practice is to train your team! We are always happy to come to you for some in-house Makaton training, and can offer bespoke consultation, discounted pricing and ongoing inclusive communication strategies as part of the package. Courses
New in 2026! – Makaton For…
This is a 3 hour specialist workshop using bespoke vocabulary that relates to everyday communication in your work. You’ll leave with a take home manual and practical skills in Makaton signing and speech that you can use right away to connect with confidence, creating a more inclusive experience that builds trust and support for everyone you work with. Maximum 15 people per session.
Cost: £80 per person

Early Years Settings – professionals/ volunteers working with children up to 5 years
Learning Disabilities Teams – professionals/ volunteers working with people of any age with a learning disability.

Makaton Taster
This is a short 90 minute – 2 hour workshop which gives you a brief taste of Makaton. No previous Makaton experience is needed. In a fun, practical and time-saving session, you can learn Makaton signs and symbols through games and activities that relate to everyday communication in your setting. Maximum 20 people per session.
Price: £30 per person
Makaton Level 1
This is a 7 hour course that starts off your official Makaton training and explains Makaton in more depth, including research and real world examples. No previous Makaton experience is needed, but you do need to complete your Level 1 to advance to higher levels. You learn around 135 Makaton signs and symbols from stages 1 and 2 through different games and activities where you apply the skills you learn. You receive a take home manual and a certificate. Maximum 15 people per session.

Makaton Level 2
This is a 7 hour course which builds on what you have learned in Level 1 and hones in on those signing skills and research knowledge, learning to personalise to the Makaton user. You learn Makaton signs from stages 3 and 4 through different games and activities where you apply the skills you learn. You must have completed level 1 to do this course. You receive a training manual and a certificate. Maximum 15 people per session.

Makaton Level 3
This is a 7 hour course which develops your Makaton to be more fluid and embedded and teaches you how to make it more accessible and meaningful. You learn Makaton signs and symbols from stages 5 and 6 through different games and activities where you apply the skills you learn. You must have completed level 1 and 2 to do this course. You receive a training manual and a certificate. Maximum 15 people per session.
Cost: £100 per person
Makaton Level 4
This is a 7 hour course which completes your Makaton Level training and Core Vocabulary set, enabling you to move on and become a Makaton Tutor for your organisation if you wish! You learn Makaton signs and symbols from stages 7, 8 and the additional IT concepts from the Makaton core vocabulary through different games and activities where you apply the skills you learn. You must have completed levels 1,2 and 3 to do this course. You receive a training manual and a certificate. Maximum 15 people per session.

Makaton Safeguarding Course
The Makaton Safeguarding workshop is designed to support professionals and carers of children and adults with severe communication and learning disabilities, with vocabulary for families, emotions, people, places, bullying and abuse, relationships, behaviour, and intimacy. This is a 2 day course and you must have completed Level 1 and 2 Makaton before booking.
Cost: £200 per person
